According to the new Empire Online issue, the new Ghostbusters movie is aiming to be both – seriously scary, while maintaining a PG-13 rating.

I want ours to be scarier than the original

Paul Feig, who is currently tackling the project, has been talking for the latest issue of the Empire Magazine, and he has opened up about his approach towards Ghosbusters.

When it comes to the very tone of the movie, he and his co-writer Katie Dipold are apparently trying to turn this future blockbuster into something that will scare the life out of audiences, but at the same time make them laugh their butts off.

“I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest. Katie Dipold and I are so focused on wanting to do scary comedy. We don’t want to hold back,” said Feig and continued:

“The reason I do a lot of R-Rated comedies is that you want a movie to feel honest. But the Ghostbusters world doesn’t need that level of swearing. We’ll have to be PG-13 with this one. I would like to make it R-Rated, but I won’t. You want the biggest number of people to watch it and not be put off by it.”

Is Feig the Right Man for the job?

One thing is sure though, Feig definitely knows a thing or two when it comes to targeting the audience. From “Freaks and Geeks” back in 1999, to “Bridesmaids” in 2011, he has proven he knows to target the right audience with the right project.

Now, if we take a look at the original Ghostbusters movie, we’ll realize they weren’t exactly saints either with the language they used, and the language in the original films wouldn’t surpass the PG-13 barrier of today, thus there should be no real resistance to a PG-13 Ghostbusters film.
