About 4 years ago, Robert Rodriguez revealed he was planning on tackling a live-action remake of ‘80s animated adventure called “Fire And Ice” and now it appears it’s finally time for this project as has recently signed a deal to direct the film for Sony.

What is “Fire And Ice” all about?

The movie will be developed from the awesome art of Frank Frazetta, a fantasy and science fiction artist, and will apparently be somewhat similar to the now legendary “Sin City” project.

The story is adapted from the Ralph Bakshi animation and it will focus on villain called Nekron who sends glaciers out that destroy most of the surrounding strongholds.

People have to retreat to Fire Keep, a town ruled by the benevolent King Jarol, however, when his daughter is kidnapped, a young warrior must venture out to save her.

Rodriguez – a lifelong Frazetta fan

In an interview for Deadline, the director admitted being ‘a lifelong Frazetta fan who was inspired by his work’ and said he always felt inspired by his art.

It was my dream to work with him, and the first thing I did when I got to Hollywood was call him. I got him to do a From Dusk Till Dawn poster for me, and I got to work with him and know him over the years. When I’d visit him at his museum and see his artwork, I tried to figure what would the ultimate Frazetta movie be,” the director stated, and continued:

“I remembered the movie he did, Fire And Ice, back when I was a kid. I thought, ‘I wish they could have made it look more like the paintings, but I guess they’d have had to paint each frame.’ Now, you could do that. You could make it look like you were in his imagination. He didn’t use models, he didn’t use swipes. He painted purely from his imagination, and the characters and the colors made you feel like you were in a dream.”

After canceling the deal with Bold Films, Rodriguez realized the project simply needs a bigger scale studio, so he and Michael De Luca made a deal with Sony, hoping the movie turns into a franchise.
