3. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

As we go through this list one thing is going to become very obvious – some of the best films over the last 20 years were box office disappointments.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best films of all time and yet it proved to be a bad investment for the studio. Apparently, people didn’t think a film about a wrongfully convicted man who miraculously escapes from prison was worth a trip to the movies, and boy, were they wrong.

Frank Darabont’s drama earned a mere $16 million at the box office, which is a little over a half of its budget of $25 million after 10 weeks of showing in theatres. It was released again during the awards season and it managed to crawl its way to $28 million.

The Academy thought it was worthy of seven Oscar nominations, but not a single win and despite the fact that initially the film wasn’t a winner it holds a special place, if not the no. 1 place, on the list of the best movies ever made.
