12 Reasons Why True Detective Became Truly Defective

2. The Characters Did Not Relate To The Story

This one nicely relates to the previous observation. Throughout the second season, the characters were indeed pushing the story forward, but all for the wrong reasons.

We all expected they would be personally connected to the main plot, one way or the other. They simply weren’t.

The main characters steered the story in the direction it needed to go, but not because they had a personal stake in it.

We get the feeling that the detectives don’t have any deeper reason to keep investigating the case except for the fact that it is their job and they’re getting paid to do so.

That’s just not enough, sorry.
