2. The Black Dahlia

When a beautiful young woman by the name of Elizabeth Short was found horrifically mutilated on January 15, 1947, the press were quick to give the unfortunate victim a creepy nickname: the Black Dahlia.

The details were nothing short of grotesque. Short’s body had been sliced in half at the waist and her face suffered deep gashes from mouth to ear.

Marks on her wrists indicated that the black-haired woman had been bound and possibly tortured before her body was dumped in the Los Angeles Leimert Park where it was found by a passer-by. The gruesome case resulted in sensational newspaper headlines, but not a single lead.

The police pulled in every suspect they could think of, including all the men Short had ever dated and even medical students who might have had the surgical training needed to sever Short’s body clean in half. There was no evidence to convict any of them.

To add a further gruesome twist to an already macabre tale, it was clear that Short’s killer was following the police investigation in the newspapers. He flaunted his presence by mailing the contents of Short’s purse to a newspaper, but the police were unable to trace the sender.

Many articles, movies and books have been written about the murder over the years, most notably James Ellroy’s novel “The Black Dahlia.” But no one has ever been arrested for the crime and, given the length of time that has passed, it’s likely no one ever will.
