3. Marilyn Monroe

Norma Jeane Mortenson, better known as the blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, was at the peak of her fame when she was found dead at her home in Brentwood, California with an empty bottle of sleeping pills in her hand.

Officially, the “Some Like It Hot” actress committed suicide. At the time the ruling seemed likely: before her death on August 4, 1962, the actress had been admitted to a psychiatric facility and was reportedly struggling with depression.

But many people suspect Monroe, 36, was murdered. Shortly after her body was discovered, a bizarre series of events took place.

Some items were allegedly taken from her Brentwood home, including a personal diary and a note, possibly incriminating, that could have far-reaching implications for the White House if discovered.

Wild theories have included mafia involvement, or a government-mandated assassination to keep her quiet about her alleged affairs with both President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert. However, neither of these liaisons were secret; in fact, Monroe’s affair with JFK had been much-talked about in Hollywood after her birthday serenade to Mr President in April 1962.

Fifty years on, Monroe’s death is still shrouded in mystery. Conspiracy theorists found further fuel for their fire when it came to light that FBI files on Marilyn’s case had gone missing. Until they’re found, controversy regarding the circumstances of Monroe’s death looks set to continue.
