4. Swimming with Sharks

“You are nothing! If you were in my toilet I wouldn’t bother flushing it.

My bathmat means more to me than you.” Kevin Spacey in a spectacular representation of a horrible boss taking it all out on a miserable employee.

Frank Whaley plays the unfortunate employee who finds himself on the receiving end of more than a few insults from his tyrannical boss in “Swimming with Sharks”.

Whaley plays Guy, an enthusiastic young writer who is thrilled to get a job working as an assistant to renowned movie mogul Buddy Ackerman played by Spacey. The job soon descends into a nightmare as Guy is verbally abused in front of his colleagues and expected to cater to Buddy’s every whim no matter how demanding.

After getting fired from the position that made him so miserable, Guy finally snaps and exacts revenge on his evil tormentor. Although it has never been confirmed, many people speculate that the character of Buddy Ackerman is based on Joel Silver.

The film’s writer and director George Huang worked as an assistant to Silver before finding fame as a director. Huang was inspired to make the movie by fellow director Robert Rodriguez who had just sold his movie “El Mariachi” to Columbia pictures where Huang was working.
