The-Invention-of-Lying

5. The Invention of Lying

“The Invention of Lying” is written and co-directed by Ricky Gervais.

It marked the first entry into major motion pictures for the British comedian best known for the UK version of “The Office,” the classic sitcom that was eventually ported over to an American series of the same name.

“The Invention of Lying,” as its name suggests, follows the story of the first man who has ever told a lie. He uses the power at first for his own gain and then quickly begins to realize just what type of power he actually wields.

He also inadvertently creates an entire religion. The film stars Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Jonah Hill and Tina Fey.

An alternative reality of unquestionable truths may seem far-fetched, but that’s the whole point! Truth and its antithesis are playfully and thoughtfully examined in this memorable film.

Gervais gives a stunning performance as the main character. Audiences will laugh with genuine glee at the ensuing hilarity that seems to go hand in hand with lying. Perhaps the film’s unusual defense of lying is why there are so many laughs to be had. See it for yourself and decide if there is any virtue to telling lies!
