25 Great Movies That Flopped

KissKissBangBang

7. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

After some personal setbacks, Robert Downey Jr. reminded everyone why he was a star long before Iron Man. It may be a cult favourite now, but no one went to see this clever mystery on the big screen.

“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” would also not be the last time that Robert Downey Jr. and its writer/director Shane Black would team up.

Shane Black would later go on to take over for filmmaker Jon Favreau on the third film in the “Iron Man” franchise in 2013.

Their second collaboration was infinitely more successful than the first. “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” is based on the detective novels from the hardboiled genre.

This literary genre shares many similarities with pulp magazines which dealt largely with crime-fiction stories. The film opened on the 20th of October 2005. It grossed a disappointing $4.2 million in the US but went on to do much better in other countries earning $11.5 million outside of the US.

Critics praised the movie for its slick dialogue and stellar performances from both Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. The film is narrated by Robert Downey Jr. who plays a petty thief that accidently becomes an actor after stumbling into an audition.
