With all these sequels and recycled stories running amok in the movie world, it’s kind of refreshing – and even surprising – to see a remake of an old classic. To be more precise, John Carpenter’s “Escape From New York” is the old-new movie that we can’t wait to see.

Deadline reports that The Picture Company is set to produce the film, while the original writer and director John Carpenter got the spot of executive producer for the film.

If you liked the 1981 original movie, the fact that the remake is being made by the same director is probably reassuring since we’ve all seen how butchered these remakes can get.

The original “Escape From New York” was made on a $6 million budget, only to end up making $25.2 million at the box office. Kurt Russell and his crew made sure this “civil war” movie became a real hit, both commercially and among the fans.

Whether the remake will be able to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the original film is impossible to say at the moment. We doubt that will be the case, but since we found out that Fox plans to turn the “Escape From New York” into a franchise, there might be some hope for the movie yet.
